FAQ: anti-spam deposit
Do I get less Monero for my Bitcoin when the swap has an anti-spam deposit?
No. If the swap succeeds, the anti-spam deposit mechanism does not come into play at all. The mechanism only activates for refunded swaps.
Does the anti-spam deposit require additional Bitcoin?
No. The deposit is a small part of the Bitcoin that — if required — may be split off in the event of a refund.
Do makers typically withhold the anti-spam deposit?
No. This would reflect badly on their reputation. Makers are incentivized to withhold the deposit only when absolutely necessary to protect themselves.
Does the anti-spam deposit go to the maker?
No. The anti-spam deposit is stored in a shared lock. The maker cannot access the deposit, only return it to you.
How is the anti-spam deposit calculated?
The anti-spam deposit amount is defined as a certain percentage of the swap size.
Example: You want to swap 0.5 BTC, the maker requires a 5% anti-spam deposit.
In the refund case, 5% of that 0.5 BTC will become the anti-spam deposit.
The deposit amount will be 0.05 * 0.5 = 0.025 BTC.
What happens with the deposit if the swap refunds?
The anti-spam deposit does not immediately get refunded. You will have to wait for 30min (3 blocks) to reclaim it. During these 30min the maker can exercise their option to withhold the deposit.
My deposit was withheld. What now?
The maker can still release the deposit. You can contact the maker via our official community channels and ask them to release the funds.
The maker only needs to know the swap id. The app will display both the swap id and the peer id of the maker.
There are scammers posing as support. Ignore private chat requests. The devs will never ask you to join a seperate “support server” or to reveal your seedphrase or private key.
Why do makers require an anti-spam deposit?
Offering guaranteed free refunds opens the makers up to spamming attacks. Anti-spam deposits allow them to deter this without hurting honest swappers.
Do all makers require an anti-spam deposit?
The protocol still allows makers to offer “deposit-free” swaps. Check the eigenwallet app for an up-to-date list of the current offers.
